Some changes

Dear all,

as you all might have noticed the internet these days is a difficult place and so even our friendly short URL service https://chilp.it is often targeted. We are in our 15th year now and had our fair share of trouble keeping our servers and API online while fighting the typical abuse of rogue users. We ran the service for free as a fun side project over the years. Times have changed and the internet has too.

In order to maintain this service, these changes are effective immediately:

  • The API is no longer supported and has been decommissioned.
Connecting to the endpoint will result in the following response:
410 – Krch! No longer supported by shortlink API!
  • All short URLs will preview the destination URL for enhanced safety first.
Meaning: No short URL will redirect to the destination URL without user interaction since users need to actively click a link to be redirected to the destination URL.
  • Blocked URLs will not be previewed but just blocked. :-)

Feel free to get back to us in case you have any questions.

Cheers,
Zalt

Unscheduled downtime [resolved]

Dear all,

http://chilp.it and http://chilp.me are currently down,
there seems to be a problem at the DC. We are currently looking into it.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
We will update you as soon as we have further information.

Update: Feel free to take a look at http://uptime.chilp.net
Update II: The services are back. We are still waiting for the final RCA.
Update III: The services are down again. The DC folks are investigating.
Update IV: The disks (!) of an important server are failing and need to be replaced. This might take a while.
Update V: http://chilp.it will remain read only until further notice. New short URLs can’t be created. Existing redirects will keep working.
Update: VI: The services are back. This happened: 2 HHDs and a CMOS battery needed to be changed. Since the Raid was broken it needed to be rebuilt too which took some time. :-)

Feel free to get back to us in case you have any questions.

Cheers,
Zalt

Uh-oh [Update]

Dear all,

our happy sites http://chilp.it and http://chilp.me are currently down and, to be honest, it’s my fault.
Well, I moved a couple of OTHER domains from one hosting company to another today and I “accidently” changed the A record of those two sites, too.

I already reverted the changes but it might take some time to propagate to your favorite DNS server since the TTL was set to 10800 seconds at that time.

I am very sorry for the trouble.

Update: Traffic is coming back. Happy shortening!

Cheers,
Zalt

Open problem: Downtime [Solved]

Chilp.it is currently down due to our provider’s sudden need to terminate all services.

Just to let you know: We are heavily working on bringing the site back to life!
We are very sorry for the inconvenience.

No previously generated short URLs will be harmed or lost!

Update: We ordered fresh and strong servers and will restore services soon. All short URLs will soon redirect to the wished destinations. Stay tuned.

Update II: The servers are in place, we are currently restoring the databases.

Update III: As soon as the databases are restored the DNS will be switched to the new server destinations.

Update IV: DNS has changed to the new IPs, services are slowly restoring. Stats and preview are still down.

Update V: All services are fully restored. Thanks a lot for your patience.

Cheers,
Jessica

Open problem: Downtime [Update]

Chilp.it is currently experiencing a rather long downtime, our provider is actively looking into it. There seems to be a serious network problem.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Update: The service is back again, we’re still waiting for a good explanation.
Update II: One of the main servers was suffering from a severe mainboard failure and needed to be replaced. Fair enough.

It’s all good now.
